The Northern Senators Forum has called on the Federal Government and the Defence Headquarters to urgently reinforce security presence in the Kopre–Sambisa corridor of Adamawa State following insurgent attacks on two military battalions and several communities.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua (Katsina Central), the forum said the 226 Battalion in Garkida and the 232 Battalion in Garaha came under attack on Wednesday and Thursday.
The attacks reportedly claimed the lives of three soldiers, a forest guard and civilians.
Several communities in Hong and Gombi Local Government Areas were also affected, including Garaha, Dabna, Bangna, Mubang, Zah, Bitirhuya, Kwapre, Mayo Ladde, Gaya-Dlang, Garkida, Boima and Guyaku.
The senators cited killings, the abduction of women and children, the burning of places of worship and the displacement of hundreds of families among the consequences of the attacks.
The forum described the incidents as an assault “on the North and on the Nigerian nation as a whole” and urged the Defence Headquarters to adopt a unified and proactive strategy to flush out insurgent enclaves in the corridor.
The senators assured residents of Adamawa that they “will not be abandoned to terrorists” and called for stronger security measures to protect affected communities.
They also appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) to provide immediate relief materials to displaced families.
The forum further urged residents to provide timely and credible intelligence to security agencies to support efforts to prevent further attacks and restore security in the affected communities.
