The Presidency has dismissed speculation about President Bola Tinubu’s health and his prolonged absence from Nigeria, saying the President is “hale and hearty” and has continued working during his stay in France.
In a statement on Sunday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Tinubu is currently on an annual working vacation in France, which he is entitled to take.
Onanuga said the President has remained engaged in official duties despite being outside the country, noting that modern technology allows him to perform his responsibilities without being physically present in Abuja.
According to the Presidency, Tinubu has also held meetings with investors in France, including engagements linked to a proposed $7 billion deep-sea port project in Ogun Waterside, an initiative of the Ogun State Government.
The statement followed questions raised by former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, about Tinubu’s whereabouts and his absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Responding, the Presidency pointed out that several African leaders, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, were also absent from the gathering.
The Presidency said Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria this week ahead of the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1.
It said the President will deliver the traditional Independence Day broadcast and attend the Lagos premiere of a film commemorating the life of the late businessman and democracy activist, MKO Abiola.
Tinubu is expected to arrive in Lagos, where he will be received by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
