President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the $800 million Final Investment Decision (FID) reached on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, on the Ima Gas Development Project, a joint venture between AMNI International and TotalEnergies EP Nigeria.
According to a statement by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the President described the FID as a major milestone in unlocking Nigeria's gas resources for industrialisation, jobs and economic growth. The Ima field, offshore in OMLs 112 and 117, was discovered in 1973 but lay undeveloped for over five decades. Production, expected to reach 300 MMscf per day at peak, is targeted for 2028.
The project is the fourth major gas FID reached since Tinubu took office, following Iseni, Ubeta and HI. According to Premium Times, Nigerian banks arranged 77 per cent of the financing, with about 60 per cent of jobs earmarked for host communities in Rivers State.
