Abuja, September 25, 2026 — Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard M. Doro, has presented Nigeria’s approach to poverty reduction and humanitarian response at a high-level side event of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Speaking at the event themed “Beyond Assistance: Reducing Poverty, Advancing Protection and Building Shared Prosperity,” Doro highlighted efforts by the Federal Government and its partners to help vulnerable households move beyond short-term assistance towards resilience, self-reliance and sustainable economic opportunities.
The Minister said vulnerable households need credible pathways that can help them recover from shocks, build resilience and progressively improve their livelihoods.
He also outlined interventions being pursued by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, stressing the need for stronger systems that connect humanitarian response with social protection, poverty reduction and economic inclusion.
The side event was convened in partnership with Innovations for Poverty Action, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), IQS and the Learning Economic Foundation.
Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives of UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of Women Affairs Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim and IOM Deputy Director-General for Operations, Ms. Ugochi Daniels, among other participants.
The discussions centred on strengthening humanitarian assistance while creating longer-term pathways that enable vulnerable people to recover, become more self-reliant and contribute to shared prosperity.
